«A History of the World in Twelve Maps» is the historical essay by Jerry Brotton, published by Penguin in paperback (544 pages, in English).
Jerry Brotton analyzes twelve maps that marked history, from almost mythical representations of Antiquity to satellite images. He shows how each world map responds to the ideas and power of its era: far from being neutral, cartography creates the vision of the world it claims to reflect.
The work was originally published in 2012; this Penguin edition is from 2013. Nominated for the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize 2013.
Work aimed at readers of history, geography and cartography, from the general public to the academic sphere.
Jerry Brotton is a British historian. He is Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London, a television and radio presenter and a curator.
