Gabriel de Araceli, recovered from the wounds of May 2 in Madrid, travels to Andalusia and takes part in the Battle of Bailén (July 19, 1808). There, the Spanish forces, made up largely of poorly armed peasants and Andalusian horsemen, defeat Napoleon's troops in Spain for the first time.
Fourth installment of the first series of the Episodios Nacionales, originally published in 1873. The first series of this historical saga takes place during the Peninsular War.
Suitable for readers of historical fiction and for those approaching the classics of nineteenth-century Spanish literature.
Benito María de los Dolores Pérez Galdós was a Spanish realist novelist and politician. He was a leading literary figure in 19th-century Spain, and some scholars consider him second only to Miguel de Cervantes in stature as a Spanish novelist.
