«Charlie Wilson's War» is George Crile's historical essay, published by Atlantic Books in paperback (550 pages, in English).
The work recounts how, in a large-scale covert operation, the CIA armed the Afghan resistance against the Soviet occupation. George Crile links this secret aid to the fall of the Soviet Union and to the rise of militant Islamism, and explains why both processes are connected.
The work was originally published in 2003; this Atlantic Books edition was released on November 8, 2007.
Aimed at readers interested in political and military history, the Cold War, espionage, and US covert operations.
George Washington "Barney" Crile Jr. was an American surgeon. He was a significant influence on how breast cancer is treated and was a visible and controversial advocate for alternative procedures, now considered normal treatments. He worked at the Cleveland Clinic for more than fifty years.
