Che cos'è la vita? es un libro de ciencia no ficción de 1944 escrito para el lector laico por el físico Erwin Schrödinger. El libro se basó en un curso de conferencias públicas impartidas por Schrödinger en febrero de 1943 en el Trinity College de Dublín. La conferencia de Schrödinger se centró en una pregunta importante: "¿cómo pueden los eventos en el espacio y el tiempo que tienen lugar dentro del límite espacial de un organismo vivo ser explicados por la física y la química?" En el libro, Schrödinger introdujo la idea de un "cristal aperiódico" que contenía información genética en su configuración de enlaces químicos covalentes. En la década de 1950, esta idea estimuló el entusiasmo por descubrir la molécula genética y daría a Francis Crick y James Watson la inspiración inicial en su investigación.

Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schrödinger, sometimes written as Schroedinger or Schrodinger, was an Austrian–Irish theoretical physicist who developed fundamental results in quantum theory. In particular, he is recognized for devising the Schrödinger equation, an equation that provides a way to calculate the wave function of a system and how it changes dynamically in time. He coined the term "quantum entanglement" in 1935. Schrödinger shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics with Paul Dirac "for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory".
