«Das Leben ist eine Karawanserei» is the novel by Emine Sevgi Özdamar, published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch in paperback (380 pages, in German).
The novel follows the childhood of a girl in mid-twentieth-century Turkey, between Ankara and Istanbul, in a family marked by labor emigration to Germany. Özdamar weaves myths, Islamic rituals and dreams with the weight of history, uprootedness and the search for a home, building a collective portrait of the country.
The work won the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 1991 and belongs to the author's Istanbul-Berlin trilogy.
A read for those interested in coming-of-age novels, magical realism and migration between Turkey and Germany.
