«Diario di scuola» is the autobiographical essay by Daniel Pennac, published by Feltrinelli in paperback (241 pages, in Italian).
The book approaches school from the viewpoint of failing students, whom Pennac calls «zopencos»; he himself was a poor student. Between personal memories and pedagogical reflections, it analyzes the role of parents and family, the dysfunctions of the school system and the media. It argues that the thirst for knowledge remains alive in young people and places affection at the center of teaching.
Originally published as «Chagrin d'école» in 2007, winner of the Prix Renaudot. The Italian translation is by Yasmina Mélaouah.
