«Die Nibelungen» is the play by German dramatist Moritz Rinke, published by Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag in paperback (126 pages).
Moritz Rinke's play rewrites the «Nibelungenlied», the great medieval German epic poem, for the theater, bringing it closer to today's audience. With agile dialogue and a touch of irony, the piece updates the legend and its characters without losing the tragic grandeur of the original story.
It was written on commission from the city of Worms, and its premiere opened the 2002 Nibelungen-Festspiele. The edition includes an epilogue by Peter von Becker. The text is in German.
It appeals to those who enjoy contemporary German theater and modern versions of the great medieval myths.
