Drawing on diaries, school textbooks and magazines of the era, he shows how the regime exploited the image of certain species to support the alleged Aryan superiority and foster racial hatred, and debunks the myth of a Nazi «animal lover»; from wolves as a totemic symbol and Göring's lions to cats branded as «unfaithful like the Jews», the horses of the Eastern Front or beetles conceived as a weapon of war.
Work originally published in German as «Tiere im Nationalsozialismus» (2020); the Dutch edition, from 2021, has 250 pages and is in Dutch.
