«Discurso del método» is the philosophical essay by René Descartes, published by Santillana in paperback (80 pages, in Spanish).
In this work, Descartes proposes a method to guide reason and distinguish truth from falsehood. After applying methodical doubt, he seeks an indubitable principle to ground knowledge and reaches his famous conclusion «pienso, luego existo». The work also addresses physics and morality, and lays the foundations of modern rationalism.
Originally published as «Discours de la méthode» in 1637. This Santillana edition is from 1997 and includes a study and notes by Rosa García Montealegre; it belongs to the Filosofía Hoy collection.
Commonly read in philosophy programs, it serves as a first approach to Descartes' thought for philosophy students.
René Descartes was a French philosopher, scientist, logician, and mathematician, widely considered a seminal figure in the emergence of modern philosophy and science during the Renaissance era. Mathematics was paramount to his method of inquiry, and he connected the previously separate fields of geometry and algebra into analytic geometry.
