«El asesinato de García Lorca» is the historical essay by Ian Gibson, published by Plaza & Janés in hardcover (400 pages, in Spanish).
The work reconstructs how, when and why Federico García Lorca was murdered in 1936 and places the crime in the context of Francoist repression in Granada. Ian Gibson examines the background of the military uprising, dismantles the image of the apolitical poet and narrates his final steps. This edition updates the original 1971 research.
The work was originally published in 1971 by Ruedo Ibérico; this Plaza & Janés edition was expanded and updated by the author and includes illustrations and bibliography.
It appeals to readers of contemporary Spanish history and to followers of the work and figure of Federico García Lorca.
Ian Gibson is an Irish author and Hispanist known for his biographies of the poet Antonio Machado, the artist Salvador Dalí, the bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee, the filmmaker Luis Buñuel, and particularly his work on the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, for which he won several awards, including the 1989 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for biography. His work, La represión nacionalista de Granada en 1936 y la muerte de Federico García Lorca was banned in Spain under Franco.
