«El gallego y su cuadrilla» is a collection of narrative sketches by Camilo José Cela, published by RBA in hardcover (286 pages, in Spanish).
It brings together short texts, halfway between caricature and etching, portraying human types and scenes of arid Spain. Cela himself presents them as the germ of his «apunte carpetovetónico», a vein of humor and criticism connecting with Quevedo, Torres Villarroel, Goya and Valle-Inclán.
The work originally appeared in 1949; this RBA edition is from 1994.
Suitable for readers interested in the short fiction of Camilo José Cela and in portraits of rural Spain with humor and a critical eye.
Camilo José Cela y Trulock, 1st Marquess of Iria Flavia was a Spanish novelist, poet, story writer and essayist associated with the Generation of '36 movement.
