«Far from the Madding Crowd» is the classic novel by Thomas Hardy, published by Penguin in paperback (374 pages, in English).
Bathsheba Everdene, an independent young woman, takes charge of a farm in the nineteenth-century English countryside. Bathsheba's presence attracts three very different suitors: farmer Boldwood, Sergeant Troy, and shepherd Gabriel Oak. Bathsheba's decisions and the tensions between them shape the fate of the rural community of Weatherbury.
Originally published in 1874, this 1994 edition belongs to the Penguin Popular Classics collection.
For readers of classic fiction and Victorian literature.
Thomas Hardy was an English novelist, poet and architect. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
