«Gender in Play on the Shakespearean Stage: Boy Heroines and Female Pages» is Michael Shapiro's essay on cross-dressing in the theater, in paperback.
The study analyzes how Shakespeare uses heroines disguised as men, the figure of the «female page», in five plays, and situates the device in the Elizabethan debate on gender and cross-dressing. From theatrical and social history, it examines the representation of women on stage and the cultural anxieties of the England of the period.
The five plays analyzed are The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Twelfth Night and Cymbeline. The work was published by University of Michigan Press in 1996.
Intended for scholars of Renaissance theater and for readers interested in the historical construction of gender and sexuality.
