«Gilgi - eine von uns» is the novel by Irmgard Keun, published by Verlag Ullstein in 2018 in paperback, in German.
Gilgi, a young, ambitious secretary, tries to carve out an independent future in a Germany heading toward Nazism: she studies languages, saves up to travel and fends off her boss's harassment. Her romance with Martin, a directionless man, derails her plans, and an unexpected pregnancy confronts her with the moral and social dilemmas of her time.
For readers of European interwar fiction interested in women's emancipation and in the social and moral conflicts of the era.
Irmgard Keun was a German novelist. Noted for her portrayals of the life of women, she is described as "often reduced to the bold sexuality of her writing, [yet] a significant author of the late Weimar period and die Neue Sachlichkeit." She was born into an affluent family and was given the autonomy to explore her passions. After her attempts at acting ended at the age of 16, Keun began working as a writer after years of working in Hamburg and Greifswald. Her books were banned by Nazi authorities but gained recognition during the final years of her life.
