«Het Pungelhuis» is the historical young adult novel by Annet Huizing, published by Lemniscaat in hardcover (192 pages, in Dutch).
Ole, thirteen, discovers he had a grandfather just as the man dies. With his father, he returns to the old man's house in the Brabant woods and is drawn into a past of silences. The narrative evokes the 1950s and 1960s: butter smugglers and customs officers, as Ole comes to understand his father's silence.
Winner of the Thea Beckmanprijs and the Cento Prize in 2022. Its themes include grandparents, father-son relationships, and smuggling in Belgium.
For young readers aged ten and up, especially those interested in historical fiction and family stories.
