«História Universal da Infâmia» is Jorge Luis Borges's collection of short stories, published by Leya in hardcover (96 pages, in Portuguese).
In these brief tales, Borges presents himself as a shy man who, instead of inventing stories, amused himself by deforming and distorting others' tales. Written between 1933 and 1934, the pieces draw on his rereadings of Stevenson and Chesterton, the films of Von Sternberg, and the biography of Evaristo Carriego, blending erudition and irony.
The original Spanish title is «Historia universal de la infamia»; this Portuguese edition, translated by José Bento, was published in 2009. The original work appeared in 1935.
For readers of short fiction and admirers of Borges who want to read this classic in Portuguese.
Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator regarded as a key figure in Spanish-language and international literature. His best-known works, Ficciones (transl. Fictions) and El Aleph, published in the 1940s, are collections of short stories exploring motifs such as dreams, labyrinths, chance, infinity, archives, mirrors, fictional writers, and mythology. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and the fantasy genre, and have had a major influence on the magical realist movement in 20th century Latin American literature.
