En 'Hoy hubiera preferido no encontrarme a mí misma', Herta Müller nos sumerge en la opresiva atmósfera de la Rumanía bajo la dictadura de Ceaușescu. La protagonista, una joven trabajadora en una fábrica de ropa, es citada para un interrogatorio que presagia ser más severo que los anteriores. Su 'crimen' es coser mensajes subversivos en los forros de trajes destinados a Italia. A través de sus recuerdos y pensamientos en el tranvía que la lleva al interrogatorio, Müller revela los horrores de la opresión y la lucha por la libertad en un régimen totalitario. La novela es una alegoría sobre la vida bajo la tiranía, donde la protagonista anhela escapar de la asfixiante realidad que la rodea.
