«Illustrations from the Inside: The Beat Within» is Louis Nevaer's illustration book, published by Mark Batty Publisher in hardcover (160 pages, in English).
It collects pencil drawings by incarcerated youth participating in The Beat Within, a writing program for juvenile prisoners whose motto is «Words not Weapons». The images offer an intimate look at these artists and the prison system they face.
In addition to the illustrations, the volume brings together texts by Louis E. V. Nevaer and Jeff Adachi, photographs by Joseph Rodriguez, and a collaboration by Adam Mansbach.
For readers interested in illustration, art, and arts programs with youth in the criminal justice system.
