«Joseph Anton: A Memoir» is the autobiography of Salman Rushdie, published by Jonathan Cape in hardcover (656 pages, in English).
On February 14, 1989, Rushdie was informed by a BBC journalist that Ayatollah Khomeini had condemned him to death for writing «Los versos satánicos»; it was the first time he heard the word fatwa. Forced to live in hiding with armed police protection, he adopted the alias Joseph Anton, taken from Conrad and Chekhov. The book recounts his nine years of seclusion, his relationship with his protectors and his struggle to regain his freedom.
It is the first edition of the book, published on September 18, 2012.
Recommended for readers interested in writers' memoirs, freedom of expression and key episodes of recent history.
