«La guerra del fin del mundo» is the historical novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, published by Seix Barral Barcelona in 1983 in hardcover (557 pages, in Spanish).
In the late nineteenth century, in the lands of northeastern Brazil, a messianic preacher gathers dispossessed peasants and founds the community of Canudos. Vargas Llosa reconstructs the war that the young republic unleashes against them and portrays religious fanaticism, inequality, and the dignity of those who join a cause that seems impossible.
The work was originally published in 1981; this hardcover edition appeared in Spain in 1983.
For readers of Latin American fiction and historical novels, with an interest in the social and religious conflicts of nineteenth-century Brazil.
Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquess of Vargas Llosa was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist, and politician. Vargas Llosa was one of the most significant Latin American novelists and essayists and one of the leading writers of his generation. Some critics consider him to have had a more substantial international impact and worldwide audience than any other writer of the Latin American Boom. In 2010, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for "his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".
