«La guerra del fin del mundo» is the historical novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, published by Seix Barral in hardcover (531 pages, in Spanish).
In northeastern Brazil, the harangues of the messianic leader known as the Counselor turn Canudos, a community of the dispossessed, into a challenge to the republic. The novel reconstructs the war the government army unleashes against it and interweaves the lives of characters such as the Little Blessed One, the Lion of Natuba, and María Quadrado.
First edition published in Barcelona in 1981, in the Biblioteca Breve collection, number 550. Cover by Antoni Tàpies.
For readers of historical fiction and Latin American literature, especially those interested in the history of Brazil in the nineteenth century.
Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquess of Vargas Llosa was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist, and politician. Vargas Llosa was one of the most significant Latin American novelists and essayists and one of the leading writers of his generation. Some critics consider him to have had a more substantial international impact and worldwide audience than any other writer of the Latin American Boom. In 2010, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for "his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".
