«La maestra de piano» is the historical novel by Janice Y.K. Lee, published by Salamandra in paperback (352 pages, in Spanish).
The story is set in two moments of Hong Kong: the British colony on the eve of the Japanese invasion and the city's reconstruction after the war. Claire Pendleton, newly arrived and married to a civil servant, is hired as piano teacher to the daughter of a wealthy Chinese family. Her fascination with colonial Hong Kong's social life leads her to meet Will Truesdale, a man marked by his past during the Japanese occupation. The plot interweaves two eras around characters such as the Eurasian Trudy Liang and the Englishman Reggie Arbogast, showing how the occupation puts an end to frivolity and forces the protagonists to fight for survival.
The book belongs to the Salamandra Bolsillo imprint, published on June 7, 2011. It is Janice Y.K. Lee's first novel.
Recommended for readers of historical fiction and contemporary fiction seeking a story set during World War II.
