«L'amante di Damasco» is the historical novel by Rafik Schami, published by Garzanti in hardcover (503 pages, in Italian).
In Damascus in 1957, the flight of Nura, wife of the calligrapher Hamid Farsi, with Salman, a Christian apprentice of her husband, unleashes a scandal. The relationship between them is impossible: Nura is married and religion stands between them. Daughter of a sheikh, she was forced to marry a cold man who confined her at home; Hamid, for his part, lives obsessed with deciphering the ancient secret of Arabic calligraphy.
The novel was originally published in German in 2004 under the title «Das Geheimnis des Kalligraphen». This Italian edition by Garzanti, translated by Paolo Scopacasa, appeared in 2009 in the collection «Narratori moderni».
