«Les inconnus de Versailles» is the historical essay by Jacques Levron, published by Librairie Académique Perrin in paperback (338 pages, in French).
Jacques Levron portrays the 'supporting players' who sustained the court of Versailles: physicians, valets de chambre, stewards, confessors, and artisans such as Louis XVI's locksmith. From the engineers of the Grandes Eaux to the Grandes Écuries, these lives reveal the intrigues and ambitions that enabled the palace's splendor.
Tempus edition of 2009; the work originally appeared in 1967.
For fans of modern French history and the inner workings of the court of Versailles, with particular attention to its secondary figures.
