The novel recreates St Francis Xavier's stay in Japan between 1549 and 1551 as an apocryphal first-person account. The author imagines the missionary's experience before a civilization with religious convictions as solid as Xavier's own: cultural clash, doubt and the impossibility of ideologically reducing another culture lead him to silence and renunciation, in a spiritual journey to the ends of the known world.
The work is written in French and originally appeared in 1985; this Motifs edition is from 2007.

René de Ceccatty is a French writer, translator and editor. He has written about 30 novels and biographies and translated works from Italian and Japanese. His 1994 work, Violette Leduc, éloge de la bâtarde provided a basis for Martin Provost's 2013 film Violette, for which de Ceccatty co-wrote the screen-play.
