The vast fortune of a deceased Indian princess, the Begum, is inherited by two distant relatives with radically different worldviews. While the French doctor Sarrasin uses his share to found France-Ville, a model city based on humanistic values in Oregon, the German chemist Schultze creates Stahlstadt, the City of Steel, an authoritarian center dedicated to arms manufacturing. This masterpiece by Jules Verne narrates the inevitable conflict between both cities, representing the clash between humanism and warmongering in a fascinating classic science fiction adventure.
