«Mister Pip» is the novel by Lloyd Jones, published by Hachette Collections in paperback (240 pages, in English).
On the island of Bougainville, besieged by an armed conflict, young Matilda attends the school reopened by the only white man in the place, the eccentric Mr Watts. Through his readings aloud of Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, the children discover Pip's world and imagination becomes a refuge, though also a dangerous territory when war tightens.
The work was a finalist for the 2007 Booker Prize and won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, the Kiriyama Prize and the ALA Alex Award.
For readers of literary fiction and book clubs interested in the transformative power of storytelling in contexts of war.
Lloyd Jones was a Welsh poet, novelist and photographer.
