The work studies the abandoned medieval churches and places of worship in the Norwegian regions of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane. The author analyzes which churches ceased to be used, when and why, on the basis of archaeological and historical evidence, to reconstruct a chapter in the ecclesiastical history of western Norway.

Published in 1998 as number 1 in the series Arkeologiske avhandlinger og rapporter of Universitetet i Bergen; the subtitle is «hvilke kirkesteder ble nedlagt, når, og hvorfor?».
