«Novelas amorosas y ejemplares» is the collection of short novels by María de Zayas y Sotomayor, published in 1988, with 333 pages, in Spanish.
In these stories, love, jealousy and honor drive plots set in Golden Age Spain. The author gives voice to women who defend their dignity and question the conventions that constrain them, within the tradition of the courtly novella, with an ironic and critical view of the society of her time.
A work of interest to readers seeking classic Spanish narrative with a female and critical perspective.
María de Zayas y Sotomayor was a writer during the Spanish Golden Age. She is considered by many modern critics to be one of the pioneers of feminist literature, while others consider her simply a well-accomplished baroque author. The female characters in de Zayas's stories enlightened readers about the plight of women in Spanish society, or to instruct them in proper ways to live their lives.
