A Garden of Earthly Delights is a novel by Joyce Carol Oates that tells the story of Clara, a young woman born into a humble family that emigrates during the Great Depression. Clara witnesses how miserable living conditions end the health of her loved ones, which leads her to build a wall between herself and the world. However, to realize her dreams, she must learn from others, and she does so when she meets Lowry, a man who teaches her to lose her fear. After the birth of her son, Clara faces the difficult choice between Revere, a restrictive man, and Lowry, seeking through her son everything that was denied to her.
