«Using the Mother Tongue» is the teaching guide by Sheelagh Deller and Mario Rinvolucri, published by First Person Publishing in paperback (96 pages).
The book advocates a selective and effective use of the mother tongue in the language classroom, a resource often officially discouraged. It proposes ideas and guidelines for deciding when and how to use it, and includes comparison and translation activities that connect the learners' own language with the foreign one to aid comprehension and learning.
It is part of the Professional Perspectives series. Published on October 1, 2002; the subtitle is Making the most of the learner's language.
For foreign language teachers, especially in ELT, who want to harness the learners' mother tongue as a classroom resource.
