«Worte in meiner Hand» is the historical novel by Guinevere Glasfurd, published by Ullstein Taschenbuchvlg. in paperback (432 pages, in German).
In 1640s Amsterdam, Helena Jans van der Strom, a bookseller's maid, can read and write in a world that denies this to women. The arrival of a guest she must call «Monsieur» —the philosopher René Descartes— awakens her curiosity, and between them an impossible relationship is born, divided by class and religion in the Dutch Golden Age.
Translated from English into German by Marion Balkenhol. Originally published in English as «The Words in my Hand».
A read for those who enjoy historical novels and period romances, with real figures like Descartes in the Dutch Golden Age.
