Millicent E. Selsam was born in New York in 1912 and dedicated her life to bringing science to children.
Her passion for biology began in high school and led her to earn a master's degree in botany at Columbia University.
After years as a science teacher, she decided to focus entirely on writing science discovery books in 1946.
She is the author of approximately 130 children's books, including the popular title Big Tracks, Little Tracks.
Her work Biography of an Atom was honored with the prestigious Thomas Alva Edison Award for the best juvenile science book.
