«Alceste» is the DVD recording of the opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck conducted by John Eliot Gardiner and staged by Robert Wilson, released by Naxos Deutschland GmbH.
The production recreates the tragedy of Alceste, willing to sacrifice her life to save her husband Admeto, in a minimalist and avant-garde staging that underscores the dramatic intensity of Gluck's score. The musical performance is by the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists, with Anne Sofie von Otter and Paul Groves in the leading roles.
1999 recording at the Théâtre Musical de Paris-Châtelet, with video direction by Brian Large. The DVD features audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 —among others, in German, Spanish and English— and subtitles in English, German, French and Spanish.
Aimed at fans of baroque and classical opera, as well as those interested in contemporary music theatre and Robert Wilson's stage productions.
