Set around 1780 in the Great Plains, the story follows Nishko, son of the Arikara tribal chief, determined to tame Mecapo, a wild colt. As he approaches adulthood, his people are attacked by rival tribes that break a treaty, and Nishko must prove his bravery to protect his own and his horse.
