Baron Ferdinando Cefalù, a Sicilian aristocrat trapped in an unhappy marriage, falls deeply in love with his young cousin, Angela. Since divorce is illegal in Italy at the time, Ferdinando devises a cunning and Machiavellian plan to get rid of his wife by involving her former lover, hoping to provoke a crime of passion that would allow him to clear his honor and marry his beloved. This acclaimed black comedy by Pietro Germi is a biting satire on the social customs and hypocrisy of 1960s Italy.
Starring Marcello Mastroianni and Stefania Sandrelli, the film is noted for its witty screenplay, which won an Academy Award, and its ability to blend tragedy with genuine comedy. This restored and remastered DVD edition offers a unique opportunity to enjoy this classic of Italian cinema, which ironically portrays a Sicilian world where the interpretation of the law is quite singular.
