Educating Rita is a 1983 British comedy-drama film directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Michael Caine, Julie Walters, and Maureen Lipman. The film is based on the play of the same name by Willy Russell. Rita, a young working-class hairdresser, decides to change her life by enrolling in a literature course at the Open University. There she meets Dr. Frank Bryant, an alcoholic and disillusioned literature professor, who becomes her tutor. As Rita becomes educated, she begins to question her values and way of life, leading to conflict with her family and friends. Frank, meanwhile, is revitalized by Rita's energy and passion, and begins to question his own life.
