Set in 1851, 'The Piano' tells the story of Ada, a mute woman who, after being widowed, is forced to leave her native Scotland to travel to New Zealand. Accompanied by her daughter and her piano, Ada faces an arranged marriage with a prosperous farmer. However, her new husband refuses to take the piano home, leaving it abandoned on the beach. A neighbor rescues the instrument and establishes a peculiar pact with Ada: he will allow her to use the piano in exchange for her letting herself be touched. This situation unleashes a series of emotions and conflicts that explore themes of love, desire and freedom in a colonial environment.
