Laura Meredith is a widow who arrives in New York with her daughter Susie and the dream of becoming an actress. There she meets Mrs. Johnson, a Black woman who has a daughter of the same age; both families end up sharing a house. Laura can then devote herself to her profession and her career takes off, while the lives of mothers and daughters become intertwined.
