In a near future, humans live in isolation and safety through robotic surrogates that they control from their homes. These surrogates, with a perfect appearance and no risk of harm, allow people to experience the world without leaving their homes. However, this seemingly utopian system is threatened when a series of murders shakes the surrogate community. FBI agent Tom Greer, played by Bruce Willis, is forced to abandon his own surrogate and venture into the real world to investigate these crimes, discovering a conspiracy that could endanger the very existence of the surrogate society.
