On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, an astronaut at Base Tantalus believes he has made an amazing discovery: fossil evidence of bacterial life. Not willing to let the relief team take all the glory, he disobeys orders to pack up and begins an expedition to collect more unauthorized samples. But a routine excavation turns into deadly disaster when the porous soil collapses and falls into a deep crevice. His devastated colleagues try to recover his body. However, when another astronaut disappears, they begin to suspect that the life form they have discovered is not without danger. As the group begins to fall apart it seems that their only hope is the imminent arrival of the relief ship Aurora.
