«Maximilian Kolbe» is the movie by Krzysztof Zanussi (1991), starring Edward Zentara and Christoph Waltz, on DVD.
In 1941, Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish priest, is arrested by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz. After a prisoner escapes, the Germans choose several men to die as a deterrent; when one of them, a family man, pleads for his life, Kolbe offers to take his place. His act of charity was recognized by John Paul II when he canonized him in 1982.
