«Ran» is Akira Kurosawa's film (1985), starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao and Mieko Harada, on DVD.
«Ran» adapts King Lear to 16th-century Japan: the aging lord Hidetora divides his kingdom among his three sons and retires, but one of them rejects the division and is banished; the ambition of the other two unleashes a civil war that consumes the family. The title, meaning «chaos» or «rebellion», sums up the spiral of betrayal and madness in the story.
