Berlin, 1930s. Christopher Isherwood, a young English writer, meets the fun-loving singer Sally Bowles, who is penniless. They strike up a curious friendship while Sally spends her time playing pranks. Christopher acts like a camera, observing Sally's behavior and his surroundings with an impassive attitude, but the situation changes abruptly with the rise of the Nazis to power. This film, directed by Henry Cornelius, adapts John Van Druten's play and is considered the precursor to the famous musical Cabaret.
