The Hireling is a 1973 British film based on the novel of the same name by L.P. Hartley. Robert Shaw stars as a chauffeur in the employ of aristocratic widow Sarah Miles. As he helps her through a nervous breakdown, a connection develops between them. However, the rigid class distinctions of British society at the time threaten to tear them apart once she recovers. Directed by Alan Bridges, this film is a dissection of social barriers and the complexities of love in a context of social differences.
