«Vania en la calle 42» is the movie by Louis Malle (1994), starring Julianne Moore, Wallace Shawn and Brooke Smith, on DVD.
André Gregory's theatre group gathers in an old empty theatre to perform «El tío Vania» by Anton Chekhov, in a version by David Mamet, without sets or costumes. Louis Malle films that rehearsal and captures how the performers move from being people to characters, with an intensity that turns every dialogue into an event. It was the French director's last film.
The DVD is region 2, with 16:9 PAL picture, audio in Spanish and English and Spanish subtitles. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 39th Valladolid International Film Week.
For film lovers interested in theatre brought to cinema and in Louis Malle's final period.
