«African Portraits» is the album by Hannibal, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Barenboim, released in 1996 by Teldec Classics on CD.
African Portraits traces four hundred years of the African American experience, from oppression and tragedy to hope, through a fusion of African musics, spirituals, blues, gospel and jazz with classical tradition forms, recorded live. It includes 'The Middle Passage' and 'Redemption'.
Live recording with Jevetta Steele, Alhaji 'Papa' Bunka Sussso, David 'Honeyboy' Edwards and the Hannibal Lokumbe Quartet.
Will appeal to jazz and classical music listeners, especially those who appreciate symphonic works with chorus and African American roots.
