«Beginner's Guide to South Africa» is a various artists compilation album, released in 2010 by Nascente on CD.
A three-disc selection surveying South African music, combining classic and contemporary names: Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Mahotella Queens and Miriam Makeba, plus the country's current scene. It closes with «Stimela», Hugh Masekela's live version with his spoken introduction about migrant workers.
The three-CD set is organized into the volumes «Now», «Shoots» and «Roots»; the selection falls within traditional and world music.
A starting point for anyone wanting to discover South African music, especially the sound of the «Graceland» era by Paul Simon.
