«Five Tango Sensations» is the album by Kronos Quartet with Astor Piazzolla, released in 1991 on Elektra Nonesuch, on CD.
A work in five movements in which Piazzolla brings tango into the string quartet realm, with his own bandoneón dialoguing with violins, viola and cello. It alternates lyricism and tension in pieces such as «Asleep», «Loving» and «Despertar», and shows the fusion of tango with contemporary music.
The release is a CD mini-album with DDD digital recording and a duration of about 26 minutes; the quartet consists of David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt and Joan Jeanrenaud.
It will appeal to those seeking the confluence of tango with contemporary classical music and to followers of Astor Piazzolla's final period.
