«L'Orfeo» is the recording of Claudio Monteverdi's opera with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, released in 1996 by Teldec Classique, on CD.
The work recreates the myth of Orpheus: the musician who descends to the underworld to recover his beloved Eurydice with the power of his song. Monteverdi presented it as a 'fable in music' and this version approaches it with period instruments and historically informed criteria, shaping the early language of Baroque opera.
The recording is sung in Italian and belongs to Teldec's Opera Collection series. It features Cathy Berberian, Rotraud Hansmann, Lajos Kozma and Max van Egmond alongside the Concentus Musicus Wien, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
For classical music collectors and listeners seeking a historically informed reading of the Baroque repertoire.
